In April, I found out the contracting company I was with was using me as a spy. I had been developing software for a State agency, and my company was using me to find out all of the problems in that application. The State had other software developers working on the majority of the code. I did what I was told to do. We thought that by presenting our findings to the higher-up's in the government that they would let us take over the job entirely. Apparently, that's not how they work. We didn't get the contract, and a month later I was laid off.
It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I was employed by a local company less than a week later with a larger salary. Yes, I had been looking for a job a month earlier. The drive to work is now 5 minutes, and I absolutely love what I do. I'm no longer a web developer, and am strictly working on real-estate software. I wouldn't have it any other way.
On June 15th, the wife and I went to the hospital - it turned out to be false labor. Sunday, June 17th, we went in, and they turned us away again. Thirty minutes later (at home), my wife's water broke. Her contractions were so painful. All I heard were blood curdling screams. They gave her an epidural, and on June 18th our daughter Ruth was born.
She is named after her Great Grandmother whom I got to know very well while attending college. She was a very smart woman, and always offered to help me no matter the situation. There was a strong sense of family honor that was with her. She was very diligent in researching family history, and had even written books about her family. We had similar personalities, which I hadn't found to be the case with family prior to staying with her. I hope to have at least honored her a little by naming my daughter after her.
And...this wouldn't be complete without posting a picture of our little Kanga-ruth.
"Hi daddy"
